Developed by Foton in partnership with KojenTürk; Cogeneration Association of Türkiye.
Cogeneration, the combined production of electricity and useful heat from a single process, is one of the most effective ways to reduce primary energy use and emissions in industry. Until now, however, energy attribute certificates have mostly told buyers where their electricity came from. They have not said how efficiently it was produced. A well-run, modern cogeneration plant and an outdated, low-efficiency one can look the same on paper. The High-Efficiency Cogeneration Label is being developed to close that gap.
Working with KojenTürk, Foton is building a labelling methodology for I-TRACK(E) certificates issued to cogeneration plants in Türkiye. The label identifies electricity generated by cogeneration units that meet high-efficiency criteria. That lets producers show their performance, and it lets buyers make more informed and credible claims.
The methodology is based on the European Union framework for Guarantees of Origin and on the EU definition of high-efficiency cogeneration set out in the Energy Efficiency Directive. Under that definition, a plant must deliver measurable primary energy savings compared with producing heat and electricity separately. Aligning with EU rules means that labelled certificates can speak the same language as those used by European markets, corporate buyers and sustainability frameworks.
Our aim is to measure energy efficiency regularly and transparently. By rewarding high efficiency, we want to encourage continued investment in modernising Türkiye's cogeneration plants.
